Roke Knoll

Roke Knoll is the central, sacred hill on Roke Island, the Isle of the Wise, where the School for Wizards is located. It is a place of immense magical power, its roots reaching down to the center of the earth, and it serves as the site for the most significant and perilous events in Ged's early life, including his first challenge to Jasper and the catastrophic summoning that loosed the shadow.

Geography and Magical Significance

Roke Knoll is a high, round, treeless green hill that Ged first saw from the ship as they entered the charmed waters of Roke Island. It is a place where all spells are strong, for its roots go down to the center of the earth. The hill is located near the Great House and the Immanent Grove, and the path to it winds through oak-groves where shadows lie thick. The Knoll is a central landmark on the island, visible from the sea and from the town of Thwil. Its slopes are covered with yellow sparkweed flowers, which, according to Jasper, grow where the wind dropped the ashes of burning Ilien when Erreth-Akbe defended the Inward Isles from the Firelord.

The Challenge and the Summoning

It was on the slopes of Roke Knoll that Jasper first challenged Ged to prove his Gontish wizardry, a moment that planted the seeds of their rivalry. Later, during the festival of the Long Dance, the rivalry came to a head. Jasper, seeking to humiliate Ged, goaded him into a contest of power on the Knoll. Ged, driven by pride and a desire to prove himself, accepted the challenge and declared he would summon a spirit from the dead. On the dark hillside, under the stars, Ged performed the Spell of Summoning. He called the name of Elfarran, and for a moment a spirit glimmered in the air. But the spell went terribly wrong. A rent tore open in the fabric of the world, and through it clambered a shapeless clot of black shadow, a hideous beast that leaped at Ged's face, tearing at his flesh. The shadow-beast, the embodiment of Ged's own arrogance and ignorance, was loosed into the world.

The Aftermath and the Archmage's Sacrifice

The catastrophic event on Roke Knoll had immediate and profound consequences. The Archmage Nemmerle, sensing the disturbance, arrived and drove the shadow away, but the effort cost him his life. He spent all his power to check the ungoverned spell and protect Ged, and he lay dying in the court of the fountain. The shadow, having been driven from the Knoll, fled into the world, and Ged was left scarred, both physically and spiritually. The Knoll itself was forever marked by the event; the Master Summoner kept watch there all night, waiting for the shadow to try to return through the rent. The hill became a symbol of Ged's failure and the terrible price of his pride.

A Place of Return and Final Confrontation

Roke Knoll remained a place of significance throughout Ged's journey. After his flight from Osskil and his restoration by Ogion, Ged returned to the Knoll in spirit, as he recalled the dark slopes and the unmoving stars of the dry land where he had followed the dying child. The Knoll was also the place where Ged's final confrontation with the shadow began, not physically, but in the spiritual realm. When Ged finally faced the shadow on the Open Sea, the confrontation echoed the one on the Knoll. The shadow, having taken on a form, fled from Ged, and the chase led them to a place beyond the world, a dry land under unmoving stars, a place that mirrored the dark, silent slopes of the Knoll. It was there, in that ultimate confrontation, that Ged spoke the shadow's name, which was his own, and the two became one, healing the wound that had been opened on Roke Knoll years before.
